Claudia and Phil Kern (fellow Lymies) spent six weeks this fall in the state of Gujarat volunteering for the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), an Indian non-profit that has helped over one million poorest-of-the-poor women organize small cooperatives and unions to improve their lives. Phil will share some insights into the lives of salt workers and farmers in the Rann of Kutch. Claudia will tell the stories and share some of the beautiful embroidery of the desert artisan women she visited. The Kerns were based in the city of Ahmedabad, so their slides will also offer a glimpse into daily life in an Indian city.
